Reflections from a returning intern

Nathan McClain was a 2016 CAPS graduate. During his senior year at CAPS he interned at Kiewit Engineering Group. He was invited to participate in the Kiewit L.E.A.D. internship program during both the summers of 2016 and 2017.

We touched base with Nathan as he was wrapping up his second summer at Kiewit in August 2017 and he had this to say:

This summer I am working in the L.E.A.D. program at Kiewit Engineering and Design in the Engineering Design and Technology Department. Some of my key tasks are working with the training database as well as updating some higher-level work flows for a new software that was rolled out to the company. My key takeaways for this summer, in particular, are that if you give every aspect of each task you work on 100 percent of your best effort, it works out better in the end. You must focus on the little details that would seem unimportant because they may be important down the road.

CAPS prepared me for this experience because CAPS is the reason I had my first internship at Kiewit. My senior year, I was an intern at Kiewit during the mornings. Were it not for CAPS and the program/relationship they have with Kiewit, I likely would not be where I am today. In a few weeks, I will return to K-State for my sophomore year. There, I am an Engineering Ambassador and the Event Coordinator for the Game Development Club. I am a computer science and physics double major, which I am enjoying very much. I am also an undergraduate research assistant for Dr. Pavithra Prabhakar in the computer science department.
